THE TITLES OF A CARPENTER

REVELATION 19:16

On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written, “king of kings and lord of lords”

(Revelation 19:16).

Americans don’t use titles for people very often, but in other cultures things are different. When I first enrolled at the Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, one of the forms I was required to fill out included questions like: What station in life is your father? What class are you from? As an American, there wasn’t much I could say!

Then after I registered, I was given a booklet that informed the students of the precise titles of all of the faculty and staff, and how each was to be addressed. Some of the teachers were to be addressed in writing as “The Well Born So-and-So,” while others were “Highly Born” and a few were even “Very Highly Born.” Moreover, educational credentials had to be included, such as “The Learned So-and-So,” and “Highly Learned,” and “Very Highly Learned.” Additionally, some were ranked as “Worthy,” etc. Thus, if I wrote a letter to my professor, I was to address it to The Very Highly Born, Very Highly Learned, Very Highly Worthy, Professor Doctor Pastor So-and-So—and woe betide if I left one of those titles out!

I thought this was ridiculous, until I got a letter addressed to “Mister Sproul.” I was indignant! It was like getting a letter addressed to “Occupant.” I had become accustomed to living in a society where such honors were taken seriously.

Jesus is the most titled person in human history. If you study the New Testament you will find literally hundreds of titles used to describe Him. Last week we only looked at four of these (Son of Man, Lord, Christ, the Word). But Jesus is also the Son of David, the Root of Jesse, the Son of God, the Lion of Judah, the Lamb of God, our Righteousness, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, Suffering Servant, Savior, Lily of the Valley, Rose of Sharon, Great High Priest, Mercy Seat, etc. There is no limit to the names and titles that God and the universe will sing to Jesus Christ!

The diverse names and titles for the Godhead can be used in prayer to your particular need. In prayer, learn to focus upon your anxiety as relieved by the Prince of Peace, illness comforted by the Suffering Servant, and earnest requests attended to by the Great High Priest of our faith.
