COCKRELL, FRANCIS MARION

(October 1, 1834–December 13, 1915), was a U.S. Senator from Missouri. In 1875, at the beginning of his five consecutive terms, 1875–1910, he stated:

Christianity is a reality, not an appearance. Were it a myth devised by cunning impostors, it would have come to naught before this. It has done more to fraternize the races than all human systems of religion together. The Bible is supreme over all books. Beside it there is none other. Its Divine truths meet the wants of a world-wide humanity.2710
