5654 “Not A Crime”
Milan (Reuter)—A Milan court ruled in 1974 that sex-change operation is not a crime.
It gave the ruling in dismissing charges against Dr. Arpiselli Mattei, 50, accused by health authorities of inflicting physical damage on 25-year-old Nicolo de Bortolo, who came to him to have his sex changed in 1967.
De Bortolo has since changed her name to Nicoletta and works as a photographic model. She wore long, black hair and an elegant black, velvet coat and embroidered jeans when she appeared in court.
5655 Woman Who Was Husband
Cocoa Beach, Florida (AP)—A Cocoa Beach waitress had filed a divorce suit against a woman who is legally her husband and father of her five-year-old son.
Carolyn Ann Earthorne said the seven-year marriage was “irretrievably broken” after her husband, Gordon Dale Earthorne, went to Morocco for a sex-change operation and became Kathy Ann Earthorne.
Kathy said she has a boyfriend now and hoped someday to remarry.
Kathy Earthorne said she would not contest the suit.

William Billie Ert, a female impersonator, and Antonio Molina got their marriage license in 1974. Ert, a native of Toronto, Canada, and Molina of Brownsville, Texas, said this was the first legal marriage between persons of the same sex in the United States.
