(1882–1961), was a U.S. Representative from Texas, 1912, reelected 24 times, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, 1940–1947; 1949–1953; 1955–1961.
On March 20, 1955, upon the opening of a prayer and meditation room in the U.S. Capitol Building, Representative Sam Rayburn commented:
I do trust that there will not be a show made of this thing. … Members in this room want to be alone with their God.3313
