EMERSON, RALPH WALDO

(May 25, 1803–April 27, 1882), was the American poet who wrote the Concord Hymn, 1836. This poem made famous the Revolutionary War battle at Concord, Massachusetts, with the phrase “the shot heard around the world.” Ralph Waldo Emerson acknowledged:

All I have seen has taught me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen.2191

America is another name for opportunity. Our whole history appears like a last effort of divine Providence in behalf of the human race.2192
