Draw on the board before the meeting five pairs of eyes, using for one pair blue, for another green, and for the others red, yellow, and white chalk.
Explain to the children that the soul sees as well as the body. Indeed, it is the soul that does the seeing even when we say that the body sees. The soul has eyes, then, as well as the body.
And the eyes of the soul—are not always of the same color as the eyes of the body. For instance, some souls have blue eyes. The person who sees through these eyes is always, as we say, in the blues. He is always worrying and anxious about everything, even when there is very little reason for worry and anxiety.
Some souls have green eyes. They are jealous of the success of others, and covetous of others’ possessions. No matter how many fine things they have, they count them all as very little in comparison with the good things that others have. You have heard jealousy called “the green-eyed monster,” have you not? Would you not hate to have those green eyes for the eyes of your soul?
There are others whose soul eyes are red. Red, you know, is the color for danger-signals, and the people that have such eyes are always afraid. In everything about them they see some peril. They do not trust even their dearest and most loving friends; least of all do they trust their heavenly Father, who is always with them, and ready to preserve them from all harm.
Other souls have eyes of golden yellow, and looking through them everything is sunshiny. These are the loving people, the kind and cheery people.
There are others whose soul eyes are white. Now, you know that white is made up of all colors, and these people have whatever is good in all kinds of eyes. They are trusting and sunny and unselfish. Though they are not afraid of danger, yet they are prudent. Though they do not worry about the future, they look forward to it and prepare for it. Though they are not jealous of others and covetous, yet they learn lessons of others, and get all the good they can from them in right ways.
Your eyes, children, may be hazel, or blue as the skies, or thoughtful brown, or as black as jet—that makes no difference. What color are the eyes of your soul?
