Uzzi

(Heb. Uzzi’, , strong [or my, strength, or contr. for Uzziah]; Sept. , with occasional v.r.; Vulg. Ozi or A zzi) the name of six Hebrews.

1. First named of the six sons of Tola son of Issachar (1Ch 7:2), and father of five sons who became military chiefs (1Ch 7:3). B.C. post 1874.

2. Second named of the five sons of Bela son of Benjamin, and, like the preceding one, chief warrior (1Ch 7:7). B.C. post 1874.

3. A high-priest, son of Bukki and father of Zerahiah (1Ch 6:5-6; 1Ch 6:51; Ezr 7:4). B.C. cir.1400. Josephus in one passage (Ant. 5, 11, 5) gives his name and position correctly (, Ozis); but in another (Ant. 8:1, 3) he calls either him or his son Joatham ( ).

4. Son of Michri and father of Elah among the ancestors of a Benjamite family in Jerusalem after the Exile (1Ch 9:8). B.C. ante 536

5. Son of Bani, chief of the Levites at Jerusalem after the Captivity (Neh 11:22). B.C. 536. 6. A priest, head of the course of Jedaiah in the time of the high-priest Joiakim (Neh 12:19). B.C. cir. 500. He was probably the same with one of the priests who sang at the consecration of the new walls of Jerusalem (Neh 12:42).

(3.) A son of Bela, and grandson of Benjamin (1 Chr. 7:7).

(4.) A Benjamite, a chief in the tribe (1 Chr. 9:8).

(5.) A son of Bani. He had the oversight of the Levites after the return from captivity (Neh. 11:22).

(6.) The head of the house of Jedaiah, one of “the chief of the priests” (Neh. 12:19).

(7.) A priest who assisted in the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem (Neh. 12:42).

1. Son of Bukki, father of Zerahiah, in the high priests’ line (1Ch 6:5; 1Ch 6:51; Ezr 7:4). Between Abishua and Zadok in the genealogy, yet never high priest (Josephus Ant. 8:1). Contemporary with, or earlier somewhat than, Eli.

2. Son of Tola of Issachar (1Ch 7:2-3). 1Ch 7:3. Son of Bela of Benjamin (1Ch 7:7).

4. Son of Michri of Benjamin, ancestor of settlers at Jerusalem after the captivity (1Ch 9:8).

Uz’zi. (strong).

1. Son of Bukki and father of Zerahiah, in the line of the high priests. 1Ch 6:5; 1Ch 6:61; Ezr 7:4. Though Uzzi was the lineal ancestor of Zadok, it does not appear that he was ever high priest. He must have been contemporary with, but rather earlier than, Eli. (B.C. before 1161).

3. Son of Bela, of the tribe of Benjamin. 1Ch 7:7. (B.C. 1706).
