Shophan

Shophan

(Heb. Shophan’, ], prob. i.q. Shaphan; Sept. ; Samar. ; Vulg. Sophar), given in the A.V. as one of the fortified towns on the east of Jordan which were taken possession of and rebuilt by the tribe of Gad (Num 32:35); but probably a mere affix (significant, according to some, of bareness) to the second Atroth, to distinguish it from the former one, not an independent place. SEE ATAROTH.
