(the rendering, more or less proper, of various Heb. words; Gr. ). Such was Hobab invited by Moses to become to the Israelites in the wilderness (Num 10:31, “that thou mayest be to us instead of eyes”). SEE EXODE.

1. The word guide.In Authorized Version of Gospels the noun guide is found only in Mat 23:16; Mat 23:24, where it represents (lit. a leader of the way). occurs also, however, in Mat 15:14, where Revised Version NT 1881, OT 1885 has consistently substituted blind guides for blind leaders of Authorized Version (cf. Act 1:16, Rom 2:19). As a verb, guide in Authorized Version of Gospels represents two different words in the original. (a) (from ) in Joh 16:13. is found also in Mat 15:14, Luk 6:39 (cf. Act 8:31, Rev 7:17), but is there rendered lead in Authorized Version , which Revised Version NT 1881, OT 1885 again properly changes to guide. (b) (lit. to make straight), which occurs only once in Gospels (Luk 1:79; but cf. 1Th 3:11, 2Th 3:5). An interesting contrast might be drawn between the false , the blind leaders of the blind (Mat 15:14; Mat 23:16, Luk 6:39), and the true (who is also Himself , Joh 14:6), who came into the world to set our feet straight into the way of peace (Luk 1:79), who promised before His departure that He would send the Spirit of truth to guide His people into all the truth (Joh 16:13), and who will Himself hereafter guide them to life-giving springs of water (Rev 7:17). With Christ as of His people cf. the of Act 3:15; Act 5:31, Heb 2:10; Heb 12:2.

2. Christ as our Guide.To communities and to individuals, otherwise walking in darkness, Christ is their Guide, the Shepherd leading His sheep, the Light preceding His people. There can be only one Guide,a man cannot follow the lode-star and also make for every flickering will-o-the-wisp that allures and entices him. Christ has deliberately and finally claimed the guidance of mankind. He bade sincere aspirants after life follow, not the Law as such, nor even God as unincarnate, but Himself, the Law-in-character and the God-in-man (Luk 18:22, Mat 16:24, Joh 12:26). His guidance is to be universal in its scope (Joh 1:4; Joh 1:9), and will be sufficient in its nature (Joh 21:22). Without Him the mass of men are as sheep without a shepherd (Mat 9:36). He alone reveals God to man (Mat 11:27), and so displays the goal of mans being. He taught, therefore, as one having unique authority (Mat 7:29), and rightly draws all men to Himself (Joh 12:32). He Himself, and no other conceivably or possibly, is the Way as well as the Truth and the Life (Joh 14:6). Hence the warning: Take heed that no man lead you astray (Mar 13:5). And so, on the other hand, the impossibility of the Christians seeking any other guidance, expressed in St. Peters exclamation: Lord, to whom shall we go? (Joh 6:68). Of this sole claim and unique authority the three chosen disciples heard the ratification in the bewildering glory of the Transfiguration: This is my beloved Son: hear ye him (Mar 9:7). This guidance Christ gives to His follower by His Holy Spirit, guiding into all the truth (Joh 16:13); and very especially through the Holy Scriptures, which tell of Him (Joh 5:39), and whose meaning He can make plain (Luk 24:27; Luk 24:45). Christ Himself ratified the guidance afforded by Scripture at crises of His life, in which example and precept were wedded together in indissoluble union, as in the Temptation, the Cleansing of the Temple, and on the Cross (Luk 4:1-44; Luk 19:46; Luk 23:46).

To put it in another way, the Fathers will was Christs will, even to the uttermost: Not what I will, but what thou wilt (Mar 14:36). So Christ guides us to union with God, our true destiny; through Him we come to the Father (Joh 14:6). Hence His guidance is into peace (Luk 1:79), as the aged Zacharias felt and declared. It is the steady, unvarying guidance of the heart towards its Divine home, the love of God, as the name Immanuel suggests (Mat 1:23). It is an absolute guidance, or no guidance (Luk 9:57-62).

gd (, ‘alluph, , nahal, , nahah; , hodegos, , hodegeo): Guide (noun) is the translation of ‘alluph, an intimate, a friend, the leader of a family or tribe: Psa 55:13, a man mine equal, my guide, the Revised Version (British and American) my companion; Pro 2:17, the guide of her youth, the Revised Version (British and American) friend, margin or guide; Jer 3:4, My father, thou (art) the guide of my youth, the Revised Version, margin companion; Mic 7:5, Put ye not confidence in a guide, the American Standard Revised Version in a friend, margin confidant (which the context shows to be the meaning), the English Revised Version guide, margin familiar friend; once of kacn, a judge, a military leader or commander (compare Jos 10:24; Dan 11:18); Pro 6:7, the Revised Version (British and American) chief, margin judge; once nahagh, to lead, is translated guide (Psa 48:14). In the New Testament hodegos, a way-leader, is translated guide (Mat 23:16, ye blind guides; Mat 23:24; Act 1:16; Rom 2:19); to guide is the translation of nahah, to lead forth (Job 38:32; Psa 73:24); once of ‘ashar, Piel, to guide or lead straight (Pro 23:19); of yaac, to command, to give counsel (I will guide thee with mine eye, the Revised Version (British and American) I will counsel thee with mine eye upon thee, Psa 32:8); of kul, to contain, to sustain (Psa 112:5, He will guide his affairs with discretion, the Revised Version (British and American) He shall maintain his cause in judgment); of nahagh, to drive, to lead (Psa 78:52); of hodegeo, to show the way, guide (Joh 16:13, He shall guide you into all truth, the Revised Version (British and American) the truth; Act 8:31); oikodespoteo is translated to guide the house the Revised Version (British and American) rule the household (1Ti 5:14); the word means literally, to be a house-master (the head of the house).

The Revised Version (British and American) has guide for lead (Psa 25:5; Mat 15:14; Luk 6:39; Rev 7:17); a guide to for more excellent than (Pro 12:26); guided for brought in (Psa 78:26); guideth for maketh (2Sa 22:33), for leadeth (Psa 23:3); my heart yet guiding me, margin holding its course, for yet acquainting mine heart (Ecc 2:3).
