servile work

servile work

A canonical expression defining work forbidden on Sundays and holy days. Protestantism, denying the authoritative visible Church, accepts necessarily, without observing it, the Jewish law. The Church distinguishes between the Divine law of worship, and the mode of observance determinable by legitimate authority, and forbids in general works characteristic of servile condition, to which others are added, specifically indicating secular business and publicity as the norm of determining what is forbidden.
