Charles Coulomb

French Catholic physicist. Born 14 June 1736; died 23 August 1806. Famous for his researches on the laws of friction and for his invention of the “torsion balance,” an instrument to detect and measure electricity. The coulomb, the practical unit of quantity of electricity, is named in his honor.
