Which when, it was full,…. As the Gospel, and the Gospel church state may be said to be, when all the ends of the preaching of the word are answered; when all are called by the one, and into the other, that were designed to be called; when the fulness of the Gentiles shall be brought in, and all Israel shall be saved.
They drew to the shore; which will be done, when the end of the world comes; then will an end be put to the Gospel ministry, the net will be drawn to shore; the preaching of the Gospel will cease, and no more use be made of it:
and sat down; the ministers of the word having done their work, enter into the joy of their Lord, and rest from their labours:
and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away; as fishermen used to do; though this last office seems, by the application of the parable, to be what will be performed by angels; who, as many as they find to have a good work of grace wrought and finished in their souls, they will gather into Christ’s barn, into the everlasting habitations, the mansions in Christ’s Father’s house, he is gone to prepare: but as for the bad, who shall appear to be destitute of the grace of God, and righteousness of Christ, notwithstanding their profession of religion, they shall be rejected, as good for nothing, and shall be cast into the lake which burns with fire and brimstone.

1) “Which when it was full,” (hen hote eplerothe) “Which when it was filled,” with sea animals, of useful and useless kind, the good and the bad or poisonous. Bad fish, the hypocrites, like Judas Iscariot in the first church, and those who denied the resurrection in the Corinth church, are sometimes taken into the church net.
2) “They drew to shore and sat down,” (anabibasantes epi ton agialon kai kathisantes) “They brought it upon the shore and sitting down to work;” It was work to separate the edible fish from the rough and poisonous sea animals that were dragged from the sea bottom.
3) “And gathered the good into vessels,” (suneleksan ta kala eis ange) “They collected the good into vessels,” for use, for personal or commercial use. The good, gathered into the vessels by the fishermen, seem to be the enlistment of those who are saved to serve and witness for the Lord in the church, Eph 3:21.
4) “But cast the bad away.” (ta de sapra ekso elabon) “Then they tossed the bad out and away,” so that they would not poison or contaminate the good fish. Every “church-ye,” every congregation, is to receive those who come for her fellowship “in the faith,” that is if they are saved, Rom 14:1. The unsaved and those who profess, but do not give evidence of possessing Jesus Christ are to be “put away” from the church fellowship, by the church in this age, 1Co 5:2; 1Co 5:4-5; 1Co 5:9; 1Co 5:11; 1Co 5:13; Mat 18:17. Such was ordained of the Lord as a measure of discipline, to protect the reputation of His church and her name, 2Th 3:13-14.

48. Full When the work of the Church on earth is completed, the Church, like a net of fishes, is drawn to the presence of its Lord, and the reckoning takes place. It will then be seen that in the apparent or visible Church, consisting of all professors, there is a real or invisible Church, consisting of all who are truly regenerate. The Church while on earth perpetually struggles to be pure; but, in her imperfect and militant state, a part of her trial is the existence of false professors whom she is unable to purify or to expel. Bad The unpalatable or refuse part.

Ver. 48. And cast the bad away ] Algam, silices, arenulas, sordes ( ). Beza. Here was of both sorts, till the separation was made. The visible Church resembles the ark, which was full of creatures of various kinds, but most unclean. Fair she is, but as the moon, which is not without her blemishes. Separatists that leave her, therefore, yea, deny her, and remain obstinate for trifles, are not unfitly by one compared to the hedge hog; which, saith Pliny, being laden with nuts and fruit, if the least filbert fall off, will sling down all the rest in a pettish humour, and beat the ground for anger with his bristles, Mulae ablactatae matrem calcibus petunt.

There is a time for everything; the time for sorting is at the end of the fishing. , vide on Mat 7:17 . Mat 13:49-50 contain the interpretation in much the same terms as in Mat 13:41-42 .

After the fishing time Is over the net will be drawn out and taken to the shore where the good fish can be separated from the others. In like manner the Gospel fish net will be spread out on the shore of the judgment. Then all those persons who have deceived their fellow men will be exposed before the eye of the great Judge.

Mat 13:48. When it was filled. A caution against too hasty attempts at separating before the Church has finished her work. If fishermen stop to sort while drawing in their net, they catch little, good or bad.
They drew up on the shore, i.e., the limit of the sea, the end of nations and of time. The next verse shows that the work of discriminating is not committed to men, however successful or zealous in the work of gathering of every kind.
The goodthe bad, i.e., fishes, though other animals usually get into the net. There are but two classes, one the children of God, and the other those whose destiny is described in Mat 13:49-50.
