And Enos lived ninety years, and begot Cainan:

9. Kenan ] The first syllable of this name is the same in Hebrew as the name “Cain,” and it is presumably akin in meaning as well as in form (see note on Gen 4:1).

And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan. According to the Septuagint a hundred and ninety years; it can hardly be thought but that he had sons or daughters before, but this is only taken notice of for a reason before given.

Verses 9-12:

The average age of the patriarchs listed from Adam through Jared was 919 years. All but Mahalleel lived over nine centuries. But they all had one other thing in common: they all died!, Ro 5:12-14. This is man’s appointment from which there is no escape, Heb 9:27.

(9) Enos lived ninety years.This proves that the years could not have been mere revolutions of the moon, as some have supposed. So Cainan was only seventy years of age at the birth of his son, and Mahalaleel sixty-five. In the LXX. no patriarch has a son until he is at least 162 years of age, so that the supposition there would be more tenable.

From Enos to Jared

v. 9. And Enos lived ninety years and begat Cainan.

v. 10. And Enos lived after he begat Cainan, eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters.

v. 11. And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years; and he died. Although there is some distant resemblance between some of the names in this list and those of the Cainites, the meaning which is attached to this fact by enemies of Scriptures as though the two accounts had originally been the same is absolutely without foundation. The children of God and the children of the world at that time were strictly separate.

v. 12. And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel.

v. 13. And Cainan lived, after he begat Mahalaleel, eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters.

v. 14. And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.

v. 15. And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared.

v. 16. And Mahalaleel lived, after he begat Jared, eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.

v. 17. And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years; and he died.

v. 18. And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch.

v. 19. And Jared lived, after he begat Enoch, eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

v. 20. And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years; and he died. The ever recurring circle of birth and death is here brought out with great impressiveness, bidding us so to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Ver. 9. Enos begat Cainan. ] Enos, that is, Sorry-man, begat Cainan, that is, A man of sorrows. Thus the fathers, though long-lived, were not unmindful of their mortality and misery.

NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: Gen 5:9-11

9Enosh lived ninety years, and became the father of Kenan. 10Then Enoch lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he became the father of Kenan, and he had other sons and daughters. 11So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.

Gen 5:10 Kenan This can mean: (1) possessor; (2) child; (3) created thing; (4) young man; or (5) spear-man (BDB 884). It is obvious with this many options (as is so often the case) that we simply do not know its meaning.
