Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Genesis 24:35

And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.

35. hath blessed ] Cf. Gen 24:1. The servant recounts the wealth of Abraham of which we have heard in Gen 12:16, Gen 13:2. The servant’s first object is to represent that, from a worldly point of view, a marriage with Abraham’s son would be not only prudent, but desirable.

And the Lord hath blessed my master greatly,…. With temporal blessings, after enumerated, which are of God, and are here ascribed to him, the Father, fountain, author, and giver of all such mercies:

and he is become great; in the world, and highly honoured and esteemed among men:

and he hath given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and menservants and maidservants, and camels and asses; though many of them were obtained in the diligent use of means, yet with the blessing of God; and others were the gifts of princes to him, as of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and Abimelech king of Gerar; yet, as it was the Lord that put it into their hearts to be so liberal to him, they are here called his gifts; see Ge 12:16.

Gen 24:35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.

Ver. 35. And the Lord hath blessed my master. ] Ministers, Christ’s spokesmen, must likewise woo for Christ, by setting forth his great wealth; and not speak one word for Christ and two for themselves, as those did in Phi 1:15 . John Baptist was no such spokesman. Joh 3:29 It is the special office of the ministry to lay Christ open, to hold up the tapestry, and let men see him as he is set forth, Heb 1:2-3 that they may be sick of love; for otherwise, Christ is like to have but a cold suit of it.

And. Note the Figure of speech Polysyndeton, App-6, to emphasize all the items which went to make up Abraham’s wealth. Twelve “ands” (3 x 4 = 12) = abundance of earthly wealth. See App-10.
