Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Genesis 8:19

Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, [and] whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.

19. after their families ] A phrase characteristic of P. Cf. Gen 10:5; Gen 10:20; Gen 10:31, Gen 36:40. It is in accordance with P’s fondness for method and order that, in his description, the animals are made to leave the ark “after their families”; they had entered it “after their kind” (Gen 7:14 P).

Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, [and] whatsoever creepeth upon the earth,…. All went out, not one was left, and they went out

after their kind; not in a confused disorderly manner, mixing with one another; but as they went in by pairs, male and female of every sort, so they came forth in like manner, or, “according to their families” c; by which it seems as if the creatures did breed in the ark, and had their families of young ones; and which is the sense of some in Aben Ezra, and he himself thinks it not foreign, though he interprets it as we do, and as the Greek version does, “after their kind”: thus they

went forth out of the ark; everyone with his mate, in order to procreate and multiply upon the earth.

Gen 8:19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, [and] whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.

Ver. 19. Every beast after their kind. ] Heb., After their families: that is, not confusedly and pell-mell, as we say, but distinctly and in order: the lion with the lioness, &c., every male with his female, the clean by themselves, and the unclean by themselves. And as these latter came to the ark unclean, and unclean they departed; so do millions, now-a-days, to the ordinances. A preacher hath as much joy to see them there as John Baptist had to see the Pharisees thronging to his baptism, when he cried out, “O generation of vipers,” who sent for you “who hath forewarned you?” &c.
