Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Genesis 8:16

Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

As Noah expected the command of God for his going into the ark, Gen 7:1-2, so for his coming forth of it.

Go forth of the ark,…. Though the earth was dry and fit to be inhabited, yet be would not go out without orders, as he had to go in; which he waited for before he would, and now he has them:

thou and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives, with thee: the Jewish writers z observe, that the manner of Noah and his family coming out of the ark is different from that of their going into it: when they went into it then went the men by themselves, and the women by themselves, and so continued apart in the ark, the use of the marriage bed being forbidden them, being a time of distress; but now when they came out they are coupled together, signifying that they were now free to cohabit together.

16. Go forth Noah patiently waited for the divine word, and did not hasten to leave the ark, although it was now about two months since he lifted the cover and saw that the earth was dry . Although, probably, he could see no reason for delay, and the narrative does not enable us to assign any reason for it, yet walking by faith, as one does who “walks with God,” he waited for Jehovah, who “shut him in,” to lead him forth . They who dwell most closely with God are often thus mysteriously bidden to stand and wait when every thing seems to call for action .

Gen 8:16. Go forth, &c. “After he had been three hundred and sixty-five days in the ark,” says Mr. Locke, “God commands him to go forth, that he might leave the ark by the same authority which ordered him to enter it:” and he testified his obedience, as well as thankfulness, by offering burnt-offerings to the Lord for his great deliverance.

Not a day is he confined more than is needful for him. When the ground is fit for his abode, God sends to deliver him from his confinement. They are sure always of being in the right who do nothing without the divine warrant. And now the earth is renewed, the blessing is renewed also. They that serve the Lord shall want no manner of thing which is good.

Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

Observe, Noah did not go forth, until the Lord issued the divine command; see Lam 3:26 .

Gen 8:16 Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

Ver. 16. Go forth of the ark. ] Learn we of this holy patriarch, to do all by God’s direction, and not dare to attempt anything without his warrant; approving ourselves to him in our comings in and goings out. He hath “charged his angels” Psa 91:11 with us, so long as we keep the king’s highway; but if we go out of his precincts, we go out of his protection. Take counsel at his mouth, and then we may safely say, “Lord, if I be deceived, thou hast deceived me”. Jer 20:7 This, as at all times we have need to do, so now especially, when there is as 2Ch 15:5 “no peace to him that goeth out, nor to him that cometh in, but great vexation upon all countries. Nation being destroyed of nation, and city of city,” &c.

8:16 {h} Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

(h) Noah declares his obedience, in that he would not leave the ark without God’s express commandment, as he did not enter in without the same: the ark being a figure of the Church, in which nothing must be done outside the word of God.
